This is a trip of around 12km (7.5 miles) starting at Beccles Quay and returning there after lunch.
It is a trip suitable for touring/sea kayaks and tandem canoes or solo canoes or paddleboarders who are capable of managing the distance and keeping up with the pace of the group.
If you are not certain of making the distance, it may be possible to pair you up in a tandem canoe with an experienced paddler. Please note this when you sign up.
Similarly, if you would like to participate but don't have transport for either yourself or a boat, please note this on sign-up and it may be possible to arrange a lift with another club member but this will depend on who is attending.
If in doubt, please ask.
Everyone signing up will initially be shown as "Short-Listed" until final leader/coach numbers etc. are known to ensure there is enough cover for the trip.
The plan for the day is to meet at the Club at 9am for those needing to borrow club boats or kit, leaving the club by 9.20am at the latest.
Time to Beccles Quay Car Park from the Club is between 30 and 40 minutes.
For those with all their own kit and who would like to meet at Beccles, please be there by 10am with a view to being on the water around 10:30am.
Beccles Quay is a pay and display car park which I think takes both change and card but bring both just in case. Charges are around £4 for 5 hours or £5 all day but may have changed.
The distance from the car park to the launch at Beccles Quay is at least 140m (or more depending on where you park in the car park) so you may like to consider bringing a trolley rather than having to carry your boat that distance. (For comparison - the portage at New Mills is 100m)
We will stop for lunch at Geldeston Locks pub for a drink, but there is unlikely to be time to order food, so please bring your own lunch.
When you sign up, please note the following:
Will you meet at the Club or at Beccles
Are you are Paddle UK member? If so, please bring your membership card with you. If not please say so on sign up - otherwise you will be assumed to have the appropriate licence to paddle on the River Waveney.
If meeting at the club which boat will you borrow and if you need any other club kit - buoyancy aid, cag, paddle, spraydeck....
If you would like to tandem with another club member
or If you are an experienced member and happy to tandem a canoe with a less experienced paddler.
If you need transport for either yourself or your craft
or If you are able to take someone else and/or their boats in your car.
Please note that if borrowing a club boat or paddle, you will be expected to hose it down on return to the Club before it is put back into the shed. This is to help prevent the transfer of non-native invasive species between rivers.
As it is getting quite cold now, consider whether you will be warm enough on the water or at lunchtime. Please don't under estimate how the wind chill can affect you and your hands. Consider bringing gloves or pogies, hat and extra layers.
Also consider bringing extra layers for lunch time (we will be seating outside) - either a large coat and gloves, to help prevent you getting cold.
Tide times at Beccles are: - Low tide 8:16am - High Tide 2:36pm
